We’re a reflective group of diverse people. So what better way to celebrate six years of boot-strapped success than to look back and review what we’ve learned. In the spirit of our Kaizen-centred values and our quest for continuous improvement, we’re looking at how far we’ve come, and how far we still want to go.
Here are 15 key things we’ve learned along the way.
1. No trust, no team.
2. If it breaks, fix it imminently. Time will always run out before tasks and if you wait too long, someone else will inevitably walk into the same hole.
3. Cull and assess processes regularly. Process changes and additions are incremental and make sense at the time, but to someone new coming in it can be like trying to undo the layers of a marble cake!
4. If it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist.
5. Just because it’s in writing, it doesn’t mean people know it’s there, or how to find it.
6. Don’t let perfection get in the way of better.
7. What got us here, won’t get us there. Be unsentimental about your creations and prepared to rewrite your own rules. A brilliant strategy may have worked two years ago, but if you’re holding on to the past, you may miss the cues of change.
8. Ruthless prioritisation. Always.
9. Be clear on your need-to-knows, and be prepared to self-select everything else. Too much time spent on trying to keep up with every Slack channel/update can mean you won’t have enough time for your primary responsibilities.
10. Look out for each other, regardless of team or time zone. Watch for signals.
11. Progress and innovation is a team effort. Managers certainly won’t have all the best ideas! If you can see an improvement or gap, speak up.
12. Reach out to new team members and be extra supportive. As the company and product keep growing, they’ll have more to learn than you did when you started.
13. As a remote team, our ‘corners of the room’ are vast! Every person has a unique perspective of the company, their role and the local environment. We need all voices to get the full picture.
14. Be flexible and adaptable to change, learning and suggestions. The journey is part of the fun and change is part of the journey, embrace it.
15. Celebrate the milestones.
